Final Foundations Posting 1

It is such a good feeling to have this course completed. I have learned so much and I am excited to continue my design journey next semester.

Final Kiosk/Booth

I have to say, I am glad that this project is over. This experience taught me so much. Working with a group was a change in how I plan and complete a project. This was frustrating at time but I think that the work that I produced was better because of the ideas and efforts of my team mates. Rachel made me look at the design in an abstract way and showed me that jumping in and creating is a great way to brainstorm. Paige was an amazing contributor as well. She was so eager to help and was able to bring her strong drawing skills to the project. I feel that my strengths in this project were space planning, attention to detail, and construction.

Update on progress

Monday night we met together and tried to finalize the roof and floorplan. We were having a very difficult time getting the right roof structure so I drafted the floorplan and used trace to create different roof shapes. This proved very helpful. Tuesday morning, we met in class and put our different parts together. Rachel had created an exterior wall treatment that gave "mass" to the space. Paige had created triangles to place on the back wall for shelving. I created two planes that together make up the roof. The crit with all 3 professors was helpful but also confusing on how to proceed. We are confident that our ideas are great but the execution and not making the space overworked is still to be seen.

Learning Models

These were two of the models that I was working with the night before pin up. They were a good idea in theory and on paper but once they were in the space they did not work at all. They were too symmetrical and did not give the same feeling as the rest of the space. I practiced covering each side to create texture. We have yet to decide on a final finish for the display column.

Pin up

Paige came up with a great concept to create cutouts on the ceiling to allow natural light into the space. She constructed the ceiling and the back wall. She also made a rendering for our pin up. Rachel created the amazing triangular shelving on the side wall. After scrapping the models that the night before, I created the asymmetrical column to support the front of the structure. We really work great as a team. Professor Leshinsky provided feedback along with our fellow classmates. It was extremely helpful and we are working with adding a smaller display unit on the front right to help define the space.

Desk Crit

During a desk crit with Professor Volchansky recommended that we try to create a 3D structure that gives the space mass. Here are a few models for the display column. The top 2 are intended to be a skeleton for the "mass".

Concept - Mineral

The concept is to create a mineral like structure emerging from the earth. We each brought in models. I created the two middle models. We decided to pursue the model created by Rachel with angled walls and triangular shapes.
