Model - Part III

Model - Part II

I am working with a circular form to mirror the form of my product. I tried using this plastic mesh but it is very difficult to work with and I will not be using it in my final model because it will not hold a shape. I used modeling clay to create a miniature and full scale model of the product. I didn't not worry about perfecting these models because I am just using them for the model making process. I have created a mold of the product that I will cast models with plaster of paris. I am hoping these models will be a part of my final display. I like the look of the trace paper for the top model. My vision would be to illuminate both sections and have black graphics on them.

Final Packaging

Lessons I have learned:
1. make as many models as I can
2. don't give up on a material the first try
3. take my time and be meticulous with my craftsmanship
4. don't settle when I know I can do better
5. continue to share ideas with my classmates

Gallery - Student Critique
Today in class we each displayed our projects around the room. Then we rotated around and critiqued each piece. We rated the projects on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest. Mine received a 4 average which I would agree with. After seeing the "5's", I knew that I could have pushed my project further. I should have pushed myself to conquer the basswood instead of giving up after the first attempt. Another option would have been to cover my box to eliminate the lines that expose how the box was put together. I think I will rework my box just for my own satisfaction. I will post pictures after tomorrows critique.

Challenges
This week I have been trying to get the final product completed but have run into several challenges. I tried to create my model using basswood for the top, per my professors recommendation. I tried several types of glue but the wood warped very easily and I was not able to get a good 90 degree angle for a perfect square. The second challenge was the base. I used plaster of Paris to create a square base with a circular hole in the middle to hold the tube of cream. I tube went through the bottom when I made the cast, so I tried adding the basswood as a bottom panel but once again, I had trouble getting a good bond. I then tried chip board with some success. The third challenge has been painting my base and top. I have tried white spray paint but I think it is too humid to get good coverage. I am headed to the craft store again this morning to look of another medium to use. I am frustrated with the challenges this weekend but I am hopeful that I will find a solution and get this completed this afternoon.
